Swedish
massage (holistic massage)
It is generally believed when searching for a definition of massage,
that the earliest usage of the word is to be found in the Arabic language
- MASAH- to press gently with the hand.
In English we find the words 'mass' and 'age', mass meaning body contents,
and age meaning to treat by rubbing and kneading.
Massage has probably been practised as long as mankind has existed.
It was highly regarded by the early Greek and Roman physicians and
is one of the earliest forms of medical treatment.
Holistic massage is a relatively new term which means 'to affect the
sum total' and this can be considered to refer to the body, mind,
spirit and emotions.
The psychological as well as physiological being is therefore given
consideration during an application of this therapy and allows for
intuition to improve the massage.
Massage can be used as follows:
To treat stress related disorders:
Insomnia
Anxiety
Depression
Aching/stiff muscles
Headaches/migraine
Some back problems*
Digestive problems
To relieve the physical or psychological pain of:
Arthritis
Sciatica
Menstruation
Bereavement/loss
Immune disorders*
Cancer*
Before and after sports:
To invigorate or to relax
Treatment for sports injuries
General all over body tonic to reduce stress and prevent health problems
*Seek medical advice before treatment.
Massage can also be helpful for those who have experienced physical
isolation from the depersonalisation of conventional medical care.
This therapy can be deeply relaxing, and is a great way of treating
yourself (or a friend!) to something truly wonderful that can actually
benefit your health and induce a feeling of well being.
